Join us for National Trails Day on June 7
For National Trails Day June 7 the Kitsap Branch is partnering with the Clear Creek Trail Committee to pick up trash and root out ivy in Old Mill Park and along the trail loop between Bucklin Hill Rd and Ridgetop Blvd. We'll be there from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Participants should bring their own gloves and tools. Trashbags will be provided. Participants are asked to check in at the picnic table near the parking lot at Old Mill park to receive their T-shirt and be directed to the work areas. There is very limited parking at Old Mill Park, so you may find it better to park in the Staples lot across Bucklin Hill Road from Old Mill Park and walk over to the Old Mill parking lot to sign in. And remember, those that sign up in advance before May 25 will receive a free Mountaineers National Trails Day T-shirt. Online signup is a click away. You'll be asked for your name, contact info, T-shirt size and whether you are a Mountaineer member. Non-members need to sign a liablility waiver and the reply e-mail confirming sign up will have a link to the form.Click here for Trail Day signup
The Kitsap Branch of The Mountaineers wants to take your group on Safari!
Designed to appeal to kids of various ages, the Mountaineers' safaris provide an excellent introduction to salmon and their habitat. Safaris are held at the Mountaineers' historic Kitsap Cabin in the natural forest setting of the beautiful Rhododendon Preserve, and can feature experts, guides, storytellers, videos, and classroom exercises according to your needs.Click here for more information.
Salmon Safaris, www.salmonsafari.org, wants you as a volunteer to make
this program work. Salmon Safaris is an outdoor education/conservation
program which takes school groups on tours of the salmon streams on the
Kitsap Property and Mountaineer Foundation Rhododendron Preserve
property.
There are a total of 11 safaris currently scheduled. The dates
of the safaris can be found using either the calendar link from the
salmon safari website or by looking at the branch calendar from the
Branch website www.kitsapmountaineers.org. Each safari needs two volunteers to properly support it. One volunteer is needed to be onsite to watch the fire in the cabin to make sure it stays burning until the
kids have finished in the cabin and then to make sure that it goes out
safely. This volunteer is also there in case something goes very wrong
and emergency services are needed; one volunteer will be responsible for putting
the EMTs on the write path to where the injured person is. (We sincerely
hope that this role will never be necessary but would be sadly remiss in our
responsibilities not to plan for it.) The other volunteer would
accompany the hike as sweeper on the way down to the salmon stream and
salmon viewing areas and then lead the hike out again with our Salmon
Safari Executive Director Katha Miller-Winder who had lead the hike down
acting as sweeper on the way out. To volunteer or if you have questions,
please, reply to this message. If you'd like to volunteer some time supporting
this educational endeavor or have questions please, reply to Branch@kitsapcabin.org.

Volunteer Alert!
Kitsap Branch has a number of opportunities available for our members to help keep the branch functioning. There are volunteer opportunities that directly benefit the Kitsap Branch and opportunities that benefit the wider outdoor community. Some volunteer opportunities require a substantial investment of time, some require only a few hours. Opportunities can be as simple as providing cookies for a general meeting to as detailed as bringing to life one of the programs waiting to be started. Whatever your skills and abilities, however much time you have to spend there is a job you can do to help. A list of opportunities is available on the website and one is posted on the bulletin board on the front door of Kitsap Cabin. To volunteer please, e-mail branch@kitsapcabin.org or call 360-692-8822.
