Trip Photos
Members are encouraged to submit trip photos to the Kitsap Mountaineers. The preferred address is John Davis at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Please limit the submissions to 5 or 6 of the most sceneic and illustrative of the outing. Add a few words to explain each photo content. If a person is clearly identifiable, please name the person. The photos will be edited for size and placement on the website. The website usually posts 4 per trip. Posting takes place when the Webmaster is not out hiking. Allow at least a week.

Whether you're a novice photographer who got a camera for Christmas, a casual photographer who just wants to get some better photographs or a serious photographer who wants to step up your game The Mountaineers Kitsap Branch Photography Course has a place for you. Designed as an adaptive modularized course that is flexible enough to meet course participants at their level this course is for all levels.

There are six class sessions and one field trip. Classes are on Thursday evenings from 7:00-9:00 at Kitsap Cabin. Dates are February 9, 16, 23 and March 1, 8 and 15 with the field trip planned for March 17. You may enroll for any session individually or for the entire course. Prices are as follows:

THURSDAY, FEB. 9          

Basic to Intermediate camera operation and digital imaging; equipment; light.

Bring your camera gear and operations manual.  Become comfortable with your camera.  Be ready for the type of photography you expect.  Make camera operations second-nature.  We will review digital photography equipment including capture and post-capture processing of images.  We will review the characteristics and use of light in photography.  There will be a photography assignment (characteristics and use of light) for the following class, learning about image evaluation and student evaluation of assignment imagesStudents will participate in the evaluation of images in the following classes. 

THURSDAY, FEB. 16         

Student photo evaluation; focal length; focus, depth of field; exposure.

Bring your camera gear and operations manual.  We will do a student photo evaluation, based upon the assignment.  We will review equipment selection and photo “readiness” for outdoor photography trips.  We will work with focal length, focus and depth of field.  We will review exposure.  There will be a photography assignment (exposure) for the following class and student evaluation. 

THURSDAY, FEB. 23        

Student photo evaluation; composition;  impact; using filters.

We will start with student photo evaluation, based upon the assignment.  We will discuss composition, how to give images impact, and how to use filters effectively.  There will be a photography assignment (composition) for the following class and student evaluation. 

THURSDAY, MAR. 1        

Student photo evaluation; landscapes; close up; HDR; panoramas. 

We will start with student photo evaluation, based upon the assignment.  We will discuss landscape and close up (“macro”)  photography.  We will introduce and work with high dynamic range (HDR) photography and panorama making. There will be a photography assignment (landscape and close up) for the following class and student evaluation.

THURSDAY, MAR. 8        

Student photo evaluation; storing, sizing and editing images.

We will start with student photo evaluation, based upon the assignment.  We will discuss storing, sizing and editing images.  The digital photograph process does not stop with image capture, but continues in the computer, to optimize images and preparation for further use of the images. 

THURSDAY, MAR. 15      

Student photo evaluation; review; preparing photo essays (Pro Show Gold). 

We will start with student photo evaluation, based upon the assignment.  We will do a summary review of the content of the previous classes, and then discuss the creation of a photo essay or show, using Pro Show Gold.

SATURDAY, MAR. 17      

Field Trip, Applying the Skills

We will use the day to photograph in a location to be determined, depending upon weather and other factors.  This may involve a sunrise or a sunset.  We will discuss the alternatives in the classes.  The important thing is to apply skills in the field, doing photographic problem solving and adapting to what is offered in the field.
