HARK activities are specifically planned for children, however parents are allowed to attend when appropriate or possible. Parents may be asked to pay their own fee depending on activity.

HARK has had a great hiking/recreational season. We will try to keep the kids as active as possible in the great outdoors and sometimes indoors. HARK is open to kids of all ages, though some outings are more appropriate or geared to a certain age group.

HARK was started by the late Tacoma Mountaineer Jo Backus, whose passion for the outdoors and children began the first HARK program. A grassroots program it was!

All activities are open to both members and nonmembers.  HARK events are free of charge to children and for those events that do cost, usually one parent is paid for.  HARK is funded through grants and gifts.

11/13/11  Sunday Vertical World in Bremerton from 2-4 pm.  Join us for an afternoon of climbing!  Provided will be equipment and shoes, no experience needed!

11/26/11 Friday Islandwood.  Come join us for the afternoon as we hike the trails of Islandwood, a 255 acre outdoor learning center on Bainbridge Island.  Hiking under towering cedars, you can then climb the tower to get a view of Mt Rainier.  Pack a picnic and we will lunch in one of their treehouses!

12/10/11  Saturday  600-730 PM.  HARK movie event.  Kicking off a special winter series in which we will offer a movie or two a month, for free, at the Mountaineers Cabin on Seabeck Hwy.  We promise to have a crackling fire to warm you, some cider to keep away the chill and plenty of fresh popcorn, all for free!  The first film appropriate for adults and children will be a documentary from Naturalist David Attenborough with stunning locations, and close up footage which explores the lives and habitats of polar bears, leopards and other amazing mammals.  Approximately one hour.

1/14/12  Saturday  Wolf Haven International.  Join us on a guided tour of this educational wolf preserve in Tenino Wa, near Olympia.  We will be educated on a variety of wolf topics such as traits and recovery programs.  We will be taken on a guided walking tour of the wolves along a pebble path.  The tour is not well suited to the younger, restless child as the wolves are very sensitive to the environment around us.  We hope you will plan to join us!

HARK Volunteers Needed PDF Print E-mail

HARK is looking for more leaders.

HARK is a great opportunity to have a positive impact on the lives of those who can most benefit by good mentors and positive experiences. It is a wonderful outreach program that takes at risk kids out for time in the woods. This is an opportunity to share your love of the outdoors with youth who may not have the advantage of great role models. Training and mentoring is available if you are interested but are not sure you currently possess the skills needed. If you would like more information, contact HARK chair Laura Rightmyer This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

HARK volunteers must be Mountaineer members and completed a background check. Background forms are available through Laura Rightmyer and are done for free.
